AWESOME NATURAL ATTRACTIVE

The rocks that we see today on the walls of the Sump Canyon, began to form about 136 million years ago based on sediments and calcium minerals (limestone), which is formed by the action of some marine animals such as corals, this means that, in ancient times, this region of Chiapas was submerged by a shallow sea.

The Canyon as such began to form 70 million years ago thanks to the action of tectonic movements called Horts-Graben; which, due to their characteristics of land mass movement, are called tectonic pillar and tectonic pit, respectively.

15 million years ago the marine waters retreated from this region thanks to geological movements that formed the important mountains of Chiapas, among them, the mountains of the Sump Canyon, which began to suffer the dissolution and erosion due to the same water, here was born the Canyon and began its formation which continues today.

From the first viewpoint, "La Ceiba", one can see Chiapa de Corzo on the right, and on a closer plane it is clearly perceived how the walls gradually take height and the Grijalva River remains just like a moving surface, through from which the boats enter the canyons with their visitors.

From the second viewpoint, "La Coyota", the proportions of the immense walls are observed; so high they turn out to be, that they only light up when the sun is at the zenith, because outside those moments the light is obstructed and this, of course, determines the amount and type of vegetation they hold, since this it varies according to the existing humidity conditions, the sun exposure and the types of soil where they hold their roots.

In the viewpoint of the "Roblar" it is necessary to walk along a long cobbled path between trees and shrubs, which lends itself to contemplate the birds and other species of fauna, which normally roam the low and medium jungle that reaches the cliffs. From the terrace, the views of the walls are still impressive and the vegetation, which takes hold not to fall, further highlights the huge vertical rocks.

The viewpoint "El Tepehuaje", the fourth of the route, allows you to see a large number of birds that swing, barely extending their wings, by the air currents that pass through the upper part of the canyon. Surely you can see the two most common species of vultures, the gray-headed (Coragyps atratus) and the red-headed (Cathartes aura), which are some of the most conspicuous birds, especially in the higher parts, as they nest in the hollows that the walls of the canyon offer, without having the discomfort that other predators cause their chicks in other circumstances.

The viewpoint "The Chiapa", is the last to be located in one of the most pronounced bends that the walls form, practically allows observing the riverbed in about ninety degrees, which disappears to the left, on a confined surface hundreds of meters below the viewpoint.Soon there will be a coffee-shop service.

Nowadays improvements are made in the facilities of each vantage point to improve the quality of services.
